Upbringing *
Phyllis Geyer,
Wheaton, IL (USA)
I was a teacher and administrator in America for 34 years. It is very important to have good teachers in schools everywhere in the world.
I visited some classes at the college in Arkhangelsk and it was a valuable experience for me. It confirms my feeling of caring, qualified people all over the world.
Most of my career in Education was as a Dean in a High School, grades 9-12. I was responsible for setting behavior policies and working with teachers, staff, parents and students in the enforcement of the school rules and regulations and for city and state laws as they would relate to the students and the school.
I believe it is important as a teacher to have a positive attitude, to care about others, always be willing to learn and to change when necessary, listen to others and admit mistakes.
It is important to know the subject(s) you are teaching, but to realize it isn't possible to know everything, so when you don't know, it is best to admit it and to work with students to find the answer. Teaching students the ability to find answers and the love of learning will result in their knowing how and wanting to be life long learners.
Behavior's often interfere with students learning the subject matter or paying attention in class. Often, when a student disrupts a class it is because of personal problems or something happening at home. It is difficult to know and understand what it may be, but awareness will help both the teacher and student. Students need to test the rules, so being firm and enforcing them is necessary. Students want teachers to stop them from misbehaving; however they will not tell you.
Less is more. This I firmly believe and know works. Have few rules, enforce them for everyone. Listen to students before making a judgment. When doing this it isn't necessary to talk much. Empathy is very important as a teacher. Learning what this is, practicing it and working on using it is very helpful in relationships.
When I started as a teacher I was scared and wondered if I could do it, realized I would make mistakes, but could learn from them if I would ask the opinions of others, continue to read, take courses and work to improve myself. As I look back I have wonderful feelings. I had bad days and times, angry students, but I was consistent and know I was respected.
For all those who say good things to you, about you over the years, there are many more who feel it, but never tell you.
My hope is for you to enjoy your life and your work. I would like to be with you in person, but not possible at this time. I have enjoyed my trips to Russia, Arkhangelsk and all the places I had the opportunity to visit.
The best part of my visits are the wonderful people I have met and many are now friends. Thank you very much.
